Of Movies and Advertisements

Today's Economics class turned into movie class. Be jealous because Mr Wong managed to compress what he taught on microeconomic reform in other classes in two sessions into one session for Architecture 1. So there was nothing better to teach elsewhere than to share a movie. It was the Emperor's Club, one movie which I must say is very Mr-Wong-y. It's about principles and teachers. I love the dialogues, stupifying and cramming in lots of Roman history of Western Civilisation.

William Hundert: Excuse me?
Louis Masoudi: Huh? What me?
William Hundert: Yes, sir. What is your name?
Louis Masoudi: Uh, Louis.
William Hundert: Just Louis?
Louis Masoudi: Louis Masoudi, sir.
William Hundert: Mr. Masoudi, could you define the word "path" for me?
Louis Masoudi: Well, there are several definitions, I suppose.
William Hundert: Would "a route along which someone or something moves" be among them?
Louis Masoudi: Yeah. Oh, yeah. No. Yeah. I'm s-sorry, sir.
William Hundert: Follow the path, Mr. Masoudi. Walk where the great men before you have walked.
Louis Masoudi: Yes, sir. It's, uh - It's better for the grass.
William Hundert: It's better for you.

That's still some very "casual" talk. A history teacher reprimanding a student for not walking on the provided path can have such dialogues. One more thing I like is the subtitles. They are positioned on the person talking and makes things so clear. However, the plot was kind of disorganized after the Mr Julius Caesar quiz thingy. Nevertheless, a good movie. Something more than just meeting the eye.

Then EALD class we did on the techniques of advertising. Is this some sort of Media Day or what. Movies then advertisements. This happens only in AUSMAT.

Enjoyed Thai advertisement a lot. Smooth-E cream. Four consecutive episodes of an unconventional advertisement. Great plot and lots of humour. Laughed like ...HAHAHA. Then we had to do advertisements for Mr Dericks @ Bang D's poh lang chang (kitchen utensils and all the household paraphernalia). My team had to promote that Aik Cheng Instant Teh Tarik. Others promoted chopsticks, sponge (which Aqil ter-said as SPONGEBOB!), candles, spatulas and paper clips. You tell me how to advertise all this mummy's stuff! And we have an assessment on that! Talk about English assessment...

It's been a great day. Media played a great role. Just end with this quote from Mr Hundert the history teacher from the Emperor's Club:

Great ambition and conquest without contribution is without significance. What will your contribution be? How will history remember you?
